Do I Need Asbestos Abatement and Removal?

Asbestos is a general term for a group of minerals that were once recognized for their heat resistance, strength, versatility and insulating properties. It was used in a variety of building construction areas: acoustic ceilings, roofing materials, vinyl flooring, plaster walls, duct insulation and so much more.

In the mid-1970s, the EPA banned asbestos due to concerns over the health effects of exposure to carcinogenic asbestos fibers. Issues include fibrotic lung disease, mesothelioma and lung cancer. With that in mind, you're likely to need asbestos abatement and removal from Project X if:

  1. Your structure is damaged by flood, fire or other emergency situations.
  2. You are remodeling or renovating and older home or commercial space.

Here in Colorado, the laws are specific about disturbing asbestos-containing materials (ACM) during any renovation project. Asbestos abatement and removal is required if you exceed certain trigger levels:

Single-Family Residential Dwellings – 50 linear feet on pipes; 32 square feet on other surfaces; or the volume equivalent of a 55-gallon drum.

Commercial Buildings – 260 linear feet on pipes; 160 square feet on other surfaces; or the volume equivalent of a 55-gallon drum.
